A break in the skin that doesn’t heal as expected after weeks of treatment is considered a chronic wound. In addition to serious health consequences such as chronic pain and loss of mobility, a wound that won’t heal can impact a patient’s mental health and cause financial strain.
June is Wound Healing Awareness month, and Texas Tech Physicians of El Paso wants Borderplex residents to know it has specialists who can help patients with chronic wounds reclaim their health.
One of these specialists is Brittany Shoemake, M.D., FACP, CWSP. Dr. Shoemake is board-certified in internal medicine and a certified wound specialist physician.
Dr. Shoemake brings a unique blend of diagnostic expertise and advanced wound management skills, helping address some of the most complex health challenges affecting our community. Her specialized wound care expertise focuses on accelerating healing, preventing complications, and restoring function, particularly for patients living with chronic conditions such as diabetes and vascular disease.
“One of the most rewarding parts of wound care is seeing tangible improvement week after week and knowing that those gains translate into better function, independence, and quality of life for patients,” said Dr. Shoemake.
Dr. Shoemake offers advanced wound care services, including removal of unhealthy tissue, strategies for reducing pressure, weight and friction from a wound, compression therapy, and early identification of infection.
Compassionate, culturally competent care
As a lifelong El Pasoan, Dr. Shoemake brings a deep understanding of the cultural, linguistic and health care landscape of our Borderplex. An Eastwood High School graduate who earned her Bachelor of Science in chemistry cum laude from UTEP, she has remained committed to serving the community that helped shape her. Fluent in both English and Spanish, she’s able to communicate clearly with patients and families, fostering trust and ensuring care plans are fully understood.
“Being bilingual and understanding our community’s values allows me to connect more deeply with patients and ensure there are no barriers to understanding their care,” Dr. Shoemake said.
Drawn to internal medicine for its emphasis on long-term patient relationships and careful diagnostic reasoning, Dr. Shoemake focuses on understanding the full scope of each patient’s health. This approach allows her to support both immediate medical concerns and long-term wellness.
“Internal medicine allows me to build lasting relationships with patients and think carefully about how to improve their quality of life over time,” she said. “Understanding each patient’s history, goals and challenges helps me support healthier, fuller lives.”
Preventive care is key
Preventive care and patient education are central to Dr. Shoemake’s approach. She partners closely with patients and families, emphasizing manageable lifestyle changes, early screening, and consistent follow-up to support long-term health and prevent avoidable complications.
“Long-term health is built on partnership and education,” she said. “Small, manageable changes often lead to the biggest improvements over time.”
In addition to caring for patients, Dr. Shoemake serves as an assistant professor in the Department of Medical Education at Texas Tech Health El Paso’s Foster School of Medicine, where she helps educate and mentor the next generation of physicians. Working alongside students, residents and faculty in a collaborative academic environment strengthens clinical decision-making and ensures care is grounded in the latest evidence-based practices.
“The academic setting allows us to combine fresh perspectives with experienced clinical judgment, which ultimately elevates the care we provide to patients,” she said.
Dr. Shoemake combines clinical expertise, community roots, and commitment to accessible, high-quality care. Together, these qualities exemplify Texas Tech Health El Paso’s mission to improve health and quality of life throughout our Borderplex.
