Coming Full Circle

From El Segundo Barrio to Texas Tech Health El Paso: Dr. Saul Ramirez’s Journey Comes Full Circle

A first-generation physician, Dr. Ramirez is dedicated to advancing preventive medicine in our Borderplex

Born and raised in El Paso’s historic Segundo Barrio, Dr. Saul Ivan Ramirez’s medical journey began in the community he now serves. A proud first-generation college graduate, he is a board-certified internal medicine doctor — a physician who specializes in the comprehensive care of adults, focusing on prevention, diagnosis and management of chronic diseases.

His path from the streets of Father Rahm and Kansas in South El Paso to the classrooms and clinics of Texas Tech Health El Paso reflects a lifelong commitment to education, service and his hometown.

After earning his Bachelor of Science in nursing from the University of Texas at El Paso in 2009, Dr. Ramirez earned his medical degree at Texas Tech Health El Paso’s Foster School of Medicine in 2016 and completed his internal medicine residency at UT Health San Antonio in 2019.

He achieved his dream, returning home to practice internal medicine at Texas Tech Physicians of El Paso and train future physicians as an assistant professor in Texas Tech Health El Paso’s Department of Internal Medicine.

Dr. Ramirez was inspired to study internal medicine by the community physicians who volunteered their time to serve residents of Segundo Barrio. Also known as the Second Ward, it’s one of the oldest neighborhoods in El Paso and listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Dr. Ramirez remembers compassionate doctors who treated his family with dignity and kindness during times of financial hardship. Today, many of his patients are residents of his old neighborhood and other South-Central El Paso neighborhoods near the Texas Tech Health El Paso campus and the Texas Tech Physicians of El Paso at Alberta clinic.

“I really enjoy the long-term relationships I can make with my patients,” said Dr. Ramirez. “By promoting preventive medicine, I’m able to see my patients live long and healthy lives.”

At Texas Tech Health El Paso, Dr. Ramirez combines his passion for teaching with his dedication to patient care. He strives to advance medical education through innovative approaches that engage Gen Z learners and embrace modern technologies like telehealth, point-of-care ultrasound, and interactive teaching tools.

His ultimate goal: to empower our Borderplex with the knowledge and resources needed to lead healthier lives.

“I’ve seen too many family, friends and community members pass away from illnesses that could have been prevented,” Dr. Ramirez said. “I want to help change that by emphasizing the importance of preventive care and education.”

When he’s not teaching or caring for patients, Dr. Ramirez enjoys spending time with his family. He also loves exploring El Paso’s rich history, savoring its one-of-a-kind cuisine, and taking in the city’s beautiful sunsets.

Dr. Ramirez’s work embodies Texas Tech Health El Paso’s mission to improve the health of our Borderplex through education, patient care and research.  His dedication also inspires future physicians to serve with compassion and purpose.
