Expert Infectious Care

Expert Infectious Disease Care Now Available to El Paso Families at Texas Tech Physicians of El Paso

Dr. Jeffrey Sherwood brings world-class training and specialized expertise to address complex infections in our Borderplex

Texas Tech Health El Paso is expanding infectious disease services for our Borderplex families with the addition of Jeffrey Sherwood, M.D., an infectious disease specialist whose military medical training and expertise strengthen care in resource-limited settings.

Dr. Sherwood earned his medical degree from the University of Kansas School of Medicine in 2004 before joining the U.S. Army, where he completed an internal medicine residency and an infectious diseases fellowship at Tripler Army Medical Center in Hawaii. His service included a deployment to Afghanistan, where he led infectious disease care in challenging conditions. He retired as a lieutenant colonel in 2018.

“The Army gave me some of the best training available,” Dr. Sherwood said. “They sent me into tropical environments to study malaria and similar diseases. The experience taught me how to manage complicated cases under pressure.”

Dr. Sherwood joined Texas Tech Physicians of El Paso (TTP El Paso) and Texas Tech Health El Paso in July 2024. He chose El Paso because it is home to his family and offers an underserved setting in infectious diseases where his skills can make an immediate impact and grow the specialty’s footprint at TTP El Paso’s Transmountain clinic.

His clinical focus includes conditions prevalent in the Paso del Norte region, such as valley fever and tuberculosis. He’s also working to improve care for drug-resistant infections, one of the most urgent and rapidly growing challenges in modern health care.

As an assistant professor with the university, Dr. Sherwood also plays a key role in medical education, training the next generation of health care heroes. His teaching style emphasizes case-based learning and evidence-based approaches, reflecting the practical skills he gained in military medicine.

“I think of it as part of the Hippocratic oath,” he said. “It’s our responsibility to pass on what we’ve learned.”

Dr. Sherwood joins a team of more than 250 TTP El Paso specialists trained at nationally recognized institutions.
