Husband-and-Wife Physicians Offer Care for Lower-Extremity Limbs and Amputation Prevention in Patients with Diabetes

Texas Tech Health El Paso’s Dr. Joshua Ekladios and Dr. Marina Tony are fellowship trained foot and ankle/podiatric surgeons specializing in complex lower extremity reconstruction

Joshua M. Ekladios, D.P.M., and Marina R. Tony, D.P.M., joined Texas Tech Health El Paso to address a growing need for complex foot and ankle care in our Borderplex. Their work focuses on limb preservation, reconstruction, foot and ankle trauma and expanding access to specialized treatment close to home.

The husband-and-wife physicians were drawn to Texas Tech Health El Paso by the region’s significant need for diabetic care and lower-extremity limb care. Their commitment to service closely aligns with the institution’s mission to serve an underserved population, advance academic medicine and address regional health disparities.

“We met in Miami through mutual friends,” Dr. Tony said. “Over time, our shared interests in medicine, patient care, and service to underserved populations led to both a professional connection and a shared vision for our future work.”

In Texas, around 2.9 million adults (about 12.7% of the adult population) have been diagnosed with diabetes, according to the Texas Diabetes Council. El Paso County has a higher prevalence, estimated at 15%, driven by a combination of demographic factors, socioeconomic barriers and broader health disparities.

“Our goal is to provide comprehensive, patient-centered lower-extremity care that spans deformity correction, wound management, limb salvage and foot and ankle trauma,” said Dr. Tony. “By addressing complex conditions early and comprehensively, we hope to reduce preventable amputations and help patients regain mobility, function and quality of life.”

Dr. Ekladios has a longstanding interest in sports medicine and physical fitness, with a focus on helping patients maintain mobility and performance across all stages of life. Dr. Tony’s path to podiatric surgery was shaped by her early life experiences in Egypt and Libya, where she frequently encountered individuals living with limb loss or untreated deformities.

In addition to their clinical work at Texas Tech Physicians of El Paso, Drs. Ekladios and Tony contribute to the academic mission of Texas Tech Health El Paso through medical student education during surgical rotations. Dr. Ekladios participates in anatomic dissection labs, and both physicians are also involved in orthopaedic resident education through their rotations with William Beaumont Army Medical Center and University Medical Center of El Paso.

Through their combined clinical expertise, service-oriented approach and dedication to teaching, Drs. Ekladios and Tony aim to make a lasting impact on patient outcomes and medical education in the El Paso community.
