OIPE Hosts TeamSTEPPS Event

The annual TeamSTEPPS Interprofessional Education (IPE) Common Core Event, hosted by the Office of Interprofessional Education (OIPE) in February, was a resounding success.

The TeamSTEPPS event is a critical component of the institution's Quality Enhancement Plan for academic reaccreditation. This year marked a significant milestone in promoting collaborative health care practice among our TTUHSC El Paso students.

TeamSTEPPS, a team-based IPE student learning event, showcases an "evidence-based set of teamwork tools aimed at optimizing patient outcomes by improving communication and teamwork skills among health care teams," according to the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality.

This year, TeamSTEPPS 2024 brought together students from TTUHSC El Paso’s Foster School of Medicine, Hunt School of Nursing, and Hunt School of Dental Medicine with students from the University of Texas at El Paso’s Pharmacy and Physical Therapy schools. The IPE Common Core event was designed to facilitate student learning and training with, about, and from each other, fostering skills necessary for effective collaboration in health care settings.

Approximately 40 dedicated staff and 55 faculty: IPE Event Ambassadors, played a pivotal role in supporting the event. The event followed a series of optional faculty and staff training sessions. Due to the commendable commitment of the faculty and staff ambassadors and OIPE, 354 students (more than ever before) were able to put their learned teamwork skills into collaborative practice during three engaging simulation cases.

Kudos to TeamSTEPPS 2024’s three Faculty Case Ambassadors: Dr. Maureen Francis, Dr. Mariela Lane, and Dr. Salma Elwazeer, whose expertise and guidance contributed significantly to the success of the simulations. Additionally, Dr. Alyssa C. Benavides (Managing Director, OIPE) and Dr. Scott Crawford (IPE Curriculum Council Chair) played key roles in ensuring the event's alignment with TTUHSC El Paso’s educational objectives. Both TECHS and OIPE teams worked together on the event; their dedication was reflective of the collaborative spirit that defines our institution.

Empowering Student Voices: Launch of TTUHSC El Paso's Inaugural Interprofessional Education Student Committee

Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center El Paso is excited to announce the establishment of its inaugural Interprofessional Education (IPE) Student Advisory Committee.

Aligned with our commitment to excellence, the IPE Student Committee, introduced as part of TTUHSC El Paso's Quality Enhancement Plan for academic reaccreditation, serves as a conduit for student feedback and recommendations regarding IPE experiences at our institution. The committee focuses on providing insights related to the design, implementation, and support of the TTUHSC El Paso Common Core IPE experience.

The IPE Student Committee is one of four interdepartmental, interschool committees that, along with TTUHSC El Paso’s Office of Interprofessional Education, form the institutional support structure for student learning and engagement in IPE. Comprising two representatives from each TTUHSC El Paso school, designated by the TTUHSC El Paso Student Government Association, the committee members are:

  • Hunt School of Nursing: Venice Redman and Celeste Carrillo.

  • Francis Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences: Alejandra Munoz and Caleb Park.

  • Hunt School of Dental Medicine: Sydnye Fields and Michael Lou.

  • Foster School of Medicine: Jose Carlos Martinez and Spencer Lee.

  • Committee Member Alternates, Hunt School of Nursing: Helen Castruita and Sophia Enriquez Perales.

The IPE Student Committee will meet quarterly throughout the academic year, engaging collaboratively to support TTUHSC El Paso's IPE programming. Their role extends to advising and assisting in the planning and coordination of IPE programs at various levels, including institutional, program-specific, co-curricular, and partner/affiliate initiatives. At the Committee’s first meeting last month, Medical School student Spencer Lee was elected as the Committee Chair.
