Texas Tech Health El Paso Physician Urges Safety as Outdoor Concert and Festival Season Begins
A packed lineup of outdoor concerts and festivals is coming in a few weeks, and fans across the Borderplex will be spending hours in the sun, on their feet, and in large crowds.
While the excitement at sold-out stadium shows and all-day music events is part of the experience, it can also come with health risks in El Paso’s hot and dry climate. Radosveta Wells, M.D., an associate professor of emergency medicine at Texas Tech Health El Paso, encourages attendees to take a few simple precautions to enjoy the festivities safely.
“Concerts and festivals should be memorable for the music—not for a trip to the emergency room,” said Dr. Wells. “With a little preparation, you can stay safe, stay hydrated and enjoy an unforgettable music experience.”

Hydrate early and often
Even in spring, El Paso’s sun and dry climate can quickly lead to dehydration. Remember to drink water throughout the day and take advantage of water bottle refill stations if available.Watch for signs of heat-related illness
Headache, dizziness, nausea or confusion can be early warning signs. Cool off by moving to a shady spot, hydrate and seek medical help if symptoms worsen.Dress for the heat and environment
Wear lightweight, breathable clothing, a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses. Choose comfortable shoes because you’ll likely be standing for long periods of time or walking more frequently.Pace your alcohol intake
Alcohol can make dehydration worse and make it difficult to recognize early symptoms of heat illness. Alternate your adult beverages with water.Know your limits with walking and standing
Large venues like stadiums, parking lots and parks can mean you’ll be walking long distances and standing for long periods. Take breaks when you can.Use sunscreen (and reapply)
Apply SPF 30+ before arriving and reapply it every two hours during daytime events.Have a plan for medical needs
Locate the first aid stations at the venue and keep medications with you.Eat regularly
Long lines and busy schedules can lead to skipped meals. Fueling up helps you maintain energy for a day and night of fun.Arrive prepared for long waits
If you plan to line up early for entry or merchandise, make sure you have water, snacks and sun protection handy.
